Materials and tools to make 3D paper star:
- Regular office paper or lightweight card stock is easy to fold, and you can always level it up with spray paint later! Or, get creative from the start with colored paper or metallic card stock.
- Scissors, craft glue , hot glue and long bamboo skewer if you are using it as a Christmas tree topper
Step 1: accordion-folding the paper star
The secret of this easy 3D paper star lies in the artful accordion fold. Begin by folding the paper in a precise accordion pattern.
Start with a piece of 8.5 x 11 printer paper. Accordion fold the paper along the 11 inch side in half, then 1/4, then 1/8 folds, like you would if you were making a paper fan.
Step 2: cut design on accordion folded paper
With your accordion-folded paper in hand, it’s time to sculpt your star. Fold your accordion in half, pressing a crease, and cut a small slit at the very center so we can slide a piece of wire or string in the center to tie everything together later.
I drew a diagonal straight line to cut the pointed star look. You can also cut snowflake designs.
Here’s a hack: Draw a diagonal line for that spiky star vibe or maybe some snowflake doodles. Cut half of it, then trace that onto the other half, so you don’t wrestle with a mega thick stack.
Repeat step 1 and 2 to make another cut accordion. Line up the 2 accordion folded paper and tie a piece of wire or string through the center slit.
Step 3: glue the 3D paper star
Fluff the folded pleats. Once you’ve unfolded your paper, you’ll witness the magic of your 3D star taking shape.
Pull open the accordion folds and join the open adjacent ends (4 total) with glue or hot glue, forming a circle. Now you have a beautiful 3d paper star!
You can hang it as Christmas decorations on walls, doors and windows, or use it as a Christmas tree topper. Simply hot glue a stick or long bamboo skewer then attach it to the top of your Christmas tree.
There you have it! This super easy 3D paper star DIY combines simplicity with elegance. Transforming plain sheets of paper into stunning celestial ornaments that you can use to decorate any space in your home, or use as a Christmas tree topper.
There are many more creative possibilities when it comes to making paper stars. Experiment with different textures and weights of paper, make stars in various colors and sizes, and try fishing line for hanging, giving your stars a floating, ethereal appearance.
