Tropical and Fruity – Travel Florida Part 1
Spoiler Alert: A best kept secret of where to taste all kinds of tropical fruits you may have never seen before!
Nestled between the mysterious Everglades National Park and the glamorous Miami, lies the town of Homestead, where an abundance of tropical garden nurseries and fruit orchard stands line up the main road for miles.
Being such lovers of cooking and gardening, Jeff and I would not pass up the opportunity to check out some exotic fruits! Our first stop is the oh-so-amazing Fruit and Spice Park.
Are you ready for the best-kept-secret? The park offers a free 45 minute tram tour that is so worth it, and during this tour, the kind and knowledgeable guide will not only tell great stories, but also pick ripe fruits right off the trees and hand them to you! Yes, you get to learn about, and TASTE all kinds of goodies!
Here are a few of our favorites, some of them we have not even heard of before!Jackfruit – tastes like mango + pinapple!
Strawberry Tree – tastes like juicy buttery candy corn!
Jaboticaba – looks and tastes like grapes!
Cocao, Pineapple, and 160 varieties of Mangos – I guess we will have to come back when they are ripe!
After all the fun in the Fruit and Spice Park, we visited a few charming fruit stands, one of which is a local favorite – Robert Is Here, with all kinds of fruit shakes and smoothies. We had to try a Mamey (one more fruit we did not know about!) shake, and wow, it was so delicious, like a really thick sweet potato / pumpkin pie blended with ice cream! Just what tourists want! =)
we also got a Mamey to eat later, see how gorgeous it looks when cut open? Taste is sweet like honey and super yummy!
Thank you for visiting and have a delicious week!
