In California for example, a pond deeper than 18 inches requires a permit and a 5’ tall pool fence. In general, it’s a good idea to keep a pond less than 12” deep unless you want to have larger fish like Koi (see resources at the end).

  1. The obvious benefit of pond fountains is their aesthetic appeal. We’re all drawn to water, and the right pond fountain can really stand out. A less commonly recognized benefit is the aeration they provide, which helps oxygenate the water and reduce excessive algae growth. By starving the algae of the nutrients they need to thrive, you free up more space for the beneficial ecosystems you would like to see. By keeping the water moving, the pond aeration provided by many pond fountains helps remove bad smells, and decrease mosquito activity.
